What is
moisture-resistant board?
The one line on a specification sheet that predicts a kitchen's lifespan more than any other.
The short answer
Moisture-resistant board — often labelled MR or HMR (high moisture resistance) — is particleboard or MDF manufactured with a resin that resists water absorption and swelling far better than standard board. In a kitchen, where humidity, spills and the occasional undetected leak are inevitable over a decade of use, it is the difference between a carcass that survives and one that swells and delaminates at the first sustained exposure.
Standard board versus moisture-resistant
Standard particleboard swells, softens and can delaminate when it absorbs moisture over time — a slow leak under a sink, condensation, or repeated splashing near a benchtop edge are all it takes. Moisture-resistant board resists that swelling substantially longer, though "resistant" is not "waterproof" — sustained standing water will eventually affect any wood-based board.

No — it resists swelling and moisture absorption significantly better than standard board, but sustained standing water will still eventually damage it. It is resistance, not immunity.
How can I tell if a kitchen uses moisture-resistant board?
It is not visually distinguishable once installed — ask the supplier directly and get the board grade stated on the quote.
Does moisture-resistant board cost much more?
It costs somewhat more than standard board, and it is one of the cheapest specification upgrades relative to how much it affects the kitchen's lifespan.
