The short answer
A soft-close hinge has a built-in hydraulic damper that slows a door in the final few centimetres of travel, so it eases shut instead of banging. Beyond the obvious noise reduction, it matters because it removes the repeated impact that eventually cracks door edges and loosens hinge screws on standard hinges — a house with children or a dog closes a door hundreds of times more often than one without.
How it actually works
A small hydraulic or pneumatic cylinder inside the hinge engages in the last stretch of the door's swing, absorbing the momentum so the door decelerates smoothly rather than stopping abruptly. It is a mechanical part, not a soft pad or bumper — which is why hinge quality genuinely varies and cheaper mechanisms wear out or start slamming again within a few years.
Why the brand behind it matters
A "soft-close" kitchen can mean a genuine Blum mechanism rated for tens of thousands of cycles, or an unbranded hinge that softens the close for the first year and then does not. Cheap, unbranded ones can lose their damping effect within a few years. Branded hinges such as Blum are rated for a very high number of open-close cycles and carry a mechanical warranty accordingly.
Can soft-close hinges be retrofitted to an old kitchen?
Often, if the existing hinge is a compatible type — ask a cabinetmaker to check before assuming, since some older hinge systems have no soft-close equivalent.
Is soft-close only about noise?
No. It also reduces the repeated physical shock that loosens screws and stresses door joints over years of use, which is a durability issue as much as a comfort one.
