The short answer
A corner carousel, often called a lazy susan, is a set of circular or D-shaped shelves that rotate inside a corner cabinet, bringing stored items around to the door opening instead of leaving them wedged in the unreachable back corner. It exists because an L-shaped kitchen layout always creates one internal corner where two cabinet runs meet, and that corner wastes roughly half its volume without some mechanism to access it.
Full-round versus D-shaped or blind-corner alternatives

Generally yes — an unaddressed corner wastes roughly half a cabinet, so a carousel or pull-out mechanism converts genuinely lost storage into usable space.
What is the difference between a carousel and a blind corner pull-out?
A carousel rotates in place inside the cabinet; a blind corner pull-out slides the entire mechanism out into the room on runners, which some people find easier to load and unload than reaching in to spin a shelf.
Does every L-shaped kitchen need a corner solution?
Not strictly, but without one that corner is largely unusable storage — worth deciding deliberately rather than leaving it as an afterthought at fit-off.
