What is
edge banding?
A thin strip that decides whether steam and spills ever reach the raw board underneath.
The short answer
Edge banding is the thin strip applied to the raw, cut edge of a cabinet panel to seal it and match the door or panel finish. It matters because the raw edge is where moisture gets into the board first — a poorly bonded edge lifts within a few years near a sink or dishwasher, while a laser-bonded edge fuses without a visible glue line and resists lifting for far longer.
Glued versus laser-bonded
Traditional glued edging uses a hot-melt adhesive that can soften with repeated heat and moisture exposure, eventually letting the strip lift at a corner. Laser-bonded edging fuses a functional layer built into the strip itself directly to the board using a laser rather than a separate glue line, which is both more durable and invisible — there is no seam to catch a fingernail or a cloth on.
Where it fails first
Corners and edges nearest the sink, dishwasher and cooktop, because that is where steam and moisture concentrate. It is worth running a hand along the front edges of any kitchen you are assessing — if you can feel a seam or see a slightly darker line, that is glued banding starting to show its age.

An edge-sealing method that fuses the banding to the panel without a separate glue line, giving a smoother, less visible join that resists moisture and lifting better than traditional hot-melt glued edging.
Does edge banding affect price?
Marginally, but it is one of the cheapest specification decisions with the biggest long-term consequence. We use laser-bonded edging on every collection as standard rather than as an upgrade.
Can lifted edge banding be fixed?
Sometimes re-glued as a temporary repair, but if it has lifted once it usually will again nearby — the more durable fix is replacing the affected panel with properly bonded edging.
