Overhead storage is the first thing to become unusable and the last thing anyone plans for. A motorised pull-down brings it to you instead.
What it does that a manual one does not
A manual pull-down overhead is a good piece of hardware — you grip a handle and draw the shelf down and forward on a sprung mechanism. It solves height. What it does not solve is force, because you still have to pull it, hold it and push it back. A motorised unit removes that entirely: a switch lowers the shelf and raises it again. If the difficulty is reach or grip rather than height alone, that is the whole difference, and it is why the two are not interchangeable.
Who it is actually for
Someone working seated, for whom an overhead is unreachable regardless of what the shelf does. Someone with limited grip or arm strength, where a sprung mechanism is the barrier rather than the help. And someone who simply should not be on a step — which covers a great many people who would never describe themselves as having a disability. It appears regularly in occupational therapist specifications for exactly these reasons.
The cabinet has to be built for it
This is the part that gets missed until it is expensive. A motorised unit has its own internal width, depth and height requirements, a weight limit, and structural fixing points that have to land in solid material rather than a cabinet back. Building a standard overhead and retrofitting a mechanism into it usually means rebuilding the cabinet. Tell us at design stage and the cabinet is drawn around the unit from the start, which costs nothing extra.
It needs power, and that decision is early
A powered unit needs a supply into the cabinet, which means an outlet or a hard-wired point behind or above it, placed before the cabinetry goes in. Adding it afterwards means opening a wall you have just finished. If a motorised overhead is even a possibility, have the electrician rough in for it — an unused point costs very little and a retrofit costs a great deal.
When the manual one is the right answer
Often. If the person using it has the grip and arm strength to draw a sprung shelf down, the manual unit does the same job for a fraction of the cost and has nothing to fail or lose power. We would rather fit a manual pull-down that suits you than sell a motorised one that does not. The fit-out options page lists the manual version with its price.
What we build, and what we do not make
We build the cabinetry and install it. The mechanism itself is a manufactured component we specify and fit — we are not its maker, and we will not pretend the unit is ours. What we are responsible for is a cabinet built correctly to take it, wired for it, and installed so it works on the day it is handed over. An overhead shelf unit that lowers down and forward at the press of a switch, bringing the contents to a reachable height, then returns. The manual equivalent does the same movement but you pull it, which is the difference that matters if grip or arm strength is the issue.
Will the NDIS pay for it?
That is determined by the participant’s plan and the supporting assessment, not by us. Motorised pull-down shelving does appear in occupational therapist specifications for home modifications. Speak to the OT and the plan manager — we quote against whatever specification comes out of that, itemised so each element is visible.
Does it need a power point?
Yes, a supply into or behind the cabinet, placed before the cabinetry is installed. Retrofitting it means opening a finished wall. If it is even a possibility, have your electrician rough in for it while they are on site.
Can it be retrofitted into my existing overheads?
Sometimes, but it depends on the cabinet’s internal dimensions and whether there is solid material to fix into. Often a standard overhead has to be rebuilt to take one, which is why it is far cheaper decided at design stage than afterwards.
Should I get manual or motorised?
Manual if you have the grip and arm strength to draw a sprung shelf down — it costs far less and there is nothing to power or fail. Motorised if reach or force is the barrier. If an OT is involved, they will specify which.
