Traditional kitchens,
built for now.
Traditional does not mean a reproduction of a particular period. It means the proportions and detailing of one, with everything else current.
The short answer
A traditional kitchen uses panelled or profiled doors, visible detail on the island and overheads, classic hardware and a restrained colour palette, without reproducing a specific historical period. The distinction matters: a period reproduction kitchen is a decorating project with a date on it. A traditional kitchen borrows the proportions — generous rails, deeper benchtop overhangs, furniture-like end panels — and keeps the storage, hardware and appliances entirely modern.

What makes it traditional rather than modern
Three things: the door has a frame and a visible profile; the cabinetry is detailed as furniture rather than as boxes, with end panels, plinths and a defined cornice; and the hardware is visible and classical rather than hidden. Nothing about the interior changes — pot drawers, soft close, internal organisation are all the same as in a contemporary kitchen.
Where the proportions matter most
The island. A traditional island is detailed as a piece of furniture: a bench with an overhang, panelled ends, often a different colour from the main run. Treat it as cabinetry and the whole kitchen reads cheaper. The second place is the cornice and plinth — a traditional kitchen that runs to the ceiling without a defined top edge loses the proportion it depends on.
Avoiding the dated version
What dates a traditional kitchen is never the door. It is the finishes around it: heavily grained laminate, ornate corbels, a tiled splashback with a border, high-gloss stone. Keep the door traditional and everything else quiet and the kitchen stays current for a very long time. Hamptons and Shaker are both narrower, more specific versions of the same idea.
The specification underneath
18mm moisture-resistant board, laser-bonded edging and Blum hardware on every collection. A traditional kitchen asks more of the carcass than a flat one, because panelled doors are heavier and the hinge has to carry them without dropping. Blum hinges adjust in three directions, so the line between doors can be set and kept.

Frequently asked
Common questions
If your question is not here, call the studio. We would rather talk it through than have you guess.
Ask us directly →What is a traditional kitchen?
One with panelled or profiled doors, furniture-style detailing on the island and end panels, and visible classical hardware, without reproducing a specific period.
What is the difference between traditional and classic?
Nothing meaningful — the words are used interchangeably. Both describe framed doors and furniture detailing rather than a dated reproduction.
Do traditional kitchens date?
The door rarely does. What dates is the finishes around it: tiled borders, ornate corbels, heavy grain and high-gloss stone.
Can a traditional kitchen have modern appliances?
It should. Traditional describes the proportions and the door, not the equipment. Integrated appliances suit it particularly well.
