Inserts cut to your drawer,
not bought to fit roughly.

The cheapest fitting on this list, and the one you touch most. A tray that fits wall to wall does not slide around; a tray from a shop does.

What is the difference from a shop-bought tray?

Width. A drawer in a kitchen drawn to your wall is almost never a standard width, so an off-the-shelf tray leaves a gap, and the tray travels every time the drawer closes. An insert cut to the drawer fills it corner to corner and stays put. That is the whole difference, and it is the reason the fitted ones feel better than they sound.

Which drawers are worth doing?

The top one, always. After that it depends on what you cook. A knife block insert in the second drawer gets used daily by some households and never by others. Spice inserts are the one people most often regret skipping, because the alternative is a cupboard where every jar is behind another jar.

Which drawers should you do first?

Start with the top drawer. It is the cheapest insert in the kitchen, you open it more than any other, and it is the one people notice within a day. Then the spice drawer, because the alternative is a cupboard where every jar hides behind another jar. An organised drawer holds slightly less and gives you all of it; an unorganised one holds more and gives you the top layer.

What about the deep drawers?

Different problem, different fitting. A deep drawer needs dividers and rails rather than trays, so that pots and plates stand rather than stack. That is covered on deep drawer fit-out and plate and pot racks.

How does it arrive?

If you order delivered assembled it is fitted and adjusted before the carton is closed. Flat packed, it arrives with the cabinet it belongs to and you fit it as you build that cabinet.

Why this matters when you pick who builds it

Nothing above is exotic. It is the ordinary detail of specifying a kitchen properly, and the reason it is written down is that most quotes do not account for any of it. A cabinet maker who has not thought about the clearance on your corner, the runner rating under your pot drawer or the trap under your sink will still quote you a number — it will just be a number for a kitchen that works less well than it could have. We draw these decisions into the plan before anything is cut, on every kitchen, at every price. That is what you are actually choosing when you choose who to buy from.

Frequently asked

Drawer organisers — questions

If your question is not here, call the studio. We would rather talk it through than have you guess.

Ask us directly →
Are fitted drawer organisers worth it?

For the top drawer, almost always. A tray cut to the drawer does not travel when the drawer closes, which is the single complaint people have about shop-bought ones.

Can I organise only some drawers?

Yes. They are quoted per drawer, so most people do the top one and the spice drawer and leave the rest open.

Do organisers reduce drawer capacity?

A little. You trade some capacity for being able to see and reach everything in it.

What suits a deep drawer?

Dividers and rails rather than trays, so pots and plates stand upright instead of stacking into each other.

In their words

The people who already
cook in one.

“For what we paid compared to what similar kitchens were costing elsewhere, we’re extremely happy with it.”
Sarah Wallace

“Could not be happier with our kitchen. The funny thing is, pretty much everyone who’s come over since we installed it has asked who did our kitchen and assumed we spent a lot more than we actually did.”
Brian T.

“Once we saw it in person, it was a pretty easy decision. It looked even better than we expected.”
