How long does a
flat pack kitchen last?
As long as the board, the edging and the hardware allow, and the assembly does not shorten. The label on the carton has almost nothing to do with it.
The short answer
A flat pack kitchen lasts as long as its weakest material. 18mm moisture-resistant board with laser-bonded edging and Blum hardware is the same specification as a good custom kitchen and lasts as long as one. 16mm standard board with glued edging and unbranded runners, in a humid Australian kitchen, fails at the edges and the drawers first and is often replaced within a decade. Whether it was flat packed or assembled changes nothing about that; how it was assembled does.
The board decides most of it
Cabinet carcasses are particleboard or MDF with a melamine face. The two things that matter are thickness and moisture rating. 18mm board holds screws and shelf weight; 16mm flexes and strips. Moisture-resistant board (usually a green core) shrugs off the humidity that a standard board swells in, and in most of Australia a kitchen is a humid room for part of the year whether or not anything is spilled. Standard board around a sink or a dishwasher is where flat pack gets its reputation.
Edging is where water gets in
The edge strip on every panel is the seal. Glued edging has a visible glue line that water tracks along, lifts at the corners, and once it lifts the board underneath swells and the door never sits right again. Laser-bonded edging is fused to the board with no glue line; there is no seam for water to find. It is a small manufacturing difference and it is the single most reliable predictor of how a kitchen looks at year ten.
Hardware is what you touch
Hinges and drawer runners are the moving parts, and moving parts wear. Unbranded runners sag, stick and drop drawers; unbranded hinges lose adjustment so doors stop lining up. Blum hinges and runners carry a lifetime mechanical warranty because they are built to be opened a hundred thousand times. On a flat pack, hardware is often where the price was cut, because it is the part you cannot see in a photograph.
Assembly can shorten all of it
A carcass built out of square puts constant load on every joint and every hinge. Cam locks over-driven with a drill split the board around them. A back panel fitted last holds whatever shape the box was in. None of it shows on day one; all of it shows by year three as doors that will not line up and drawers that rub. This is the one way flat pack differs from assembled: with assembled, the squareness is done on a bench by someone who does it daily.
Where it lives matters
Coastal humidity, a rental with tenants, a short-stay unit turned over weekly, a laundry with a machine vibrating beside the cabinet — all of these shorten the life of cheap board and hardware faster than a family kitchen does. The specification that survives them is the same one: 18mm moisture-resistant, laser-bonded, Blum. Buying to a lower specification for a hard-use room is buying twice.
How to buy a flat pack that lasts
Ask three questions and get the answers in writing: board thickness and moisture rating, edging method, hardware brand. If any answer is vague, that is the answer. Then either build it square — our assembly guide covers how — or have it delivered assembled so the squareness is done before it arrives.
