Are flat pack kitchens
good quality?
Some are, and the ones that are cost about what a good custom kitchen costs to make, because they are made of the same things. The rest are cheap for a reason you can find in about a minute.
The short answer
Flat pack is a delivery format, not a quality grade. The quality of any kitchen — flat pack, assembled or custom — comes down to four checkable things: board thickness and moisture rating, edging method, hardware brand, and whether the cabinets are cut to your room or picked from a catalogue. A flat pack that passes all four is a good kitchen. A custom kitchen that fails two of them is not.
Where the reputation comes from
Flat pack got its name from the bottom of the market: fixed-width cabinets in 16mm standard board, glued edging, unbranded runners, filler panels to hide the gap where the run did not fit the wall. That kitchen is poor quality, and it would be poor quality if it arrived assembled. The format did not make it cheap; the specification did. The mistake is treating the carton as the thing to judge.
Check one: the board
18mm or 16mm, and moisture-resistant or standard. Ask, and ask for it in writing. 18mm moisture-resistant is the specification of a good custom kitchen; 16mm standard is the specification of a kitchen that swells at the sink. Most of the price difference between cheap flat pack and good flat pack is in this line.
Check two: the edging
Laser-bonded edging has no glue line and does not lift. Glued edging has a visible dark line and lifts at the corners near water. Run a fingernail along a sample edge: if you can feel a seam, water can find it. This is the check people skip because it sounds technical, and it is the most reliable one.
Check three: the hardware
Name the brand. Blum, Hettich and Grass are the brands a cabinetmaker would use; anything unnamed is unnamed for a reason. Runners should be full-extension and soft-close; hinges should be soft-close with three-way adjustment. This is the part that decides whether the kitchen feels good in year five.
Check four: catalogue or cut to size
A catalogue flat pack comes in fixed widths and fills the difference with filler panels, which means wasted space, awkward corners and a run that looks like it was bought rather than designed. Cut-to-size flat pack is drawn to your wall lengths and ceiling height, so it fits the way a custom kitchen fits. The second costs more than the first and less than custom, and it is the one worth buying.
Then there is assembly
A good flat pack built badly is a bad kitchen. Carcasses out of square, cam locks over-driven, back panels fitted last — all of it shows by year three. Either build it carefully (our assembly guide) or take the same kitchen delivered assembled, with the squareness done on a bench. That is the one genuine difference between the two, and it is a labour question, not a quality one.
So: are they good quality?
The ones that pass the four checks are as good as any custom kitchen, because they are made of the same materials by the same kind of machinery, and they cost less only because you are doing the assembly or paying for it separately. What makes a flat pack kitchen poor quality?
16mm standard board, glued edging, unbranded hardware and catalogue widths with filler panels. Any one of those is a warning; all four is the bottom of the market.
Is a more expensive flat pack worth it?
If the extra money is in the board, edging and hardware, yes, because those decide how the kitchen looks at year ten. If it is in the brand name or the showroom, no.
