You cannot judge
a colour in the dark.

Most wardrobes are lit by the bedroom light, behind you, casting your own shadow onto the clothes. That is the problem this solves.

Why light a wardrobe at all?

Because the usual arrangement puts the light source behind you and your shadow on the thing you are looking at. At six in the morning that is the difference between navy and black. Light inside the robe, in front of the clothes, is the only arrangement that actually works.

Rail, shelf or drawer?

A lit rail is the one that matters most, because it lights hanging clothes where you look. Shelf lighting suits folded storage and open shelving in a walk-in. A glazed lit drawer is for watches and jewellery and is as much display as function — see drawer inserts.

Sensor or switch?

Sensor, almost always. A light that comes on as the door opens or the drawer slides is a light you never think about, and never leave on. The exception is a walk-in you spend real time in, where a switch you control is less irritating than a sensor that times out while you are deciding.

What does it need from the joinery?

Power into the cabinet, which has to be on the plan before the carcass is built. Retrofitting lighting into finished joinery means a visible cable or a cut you can see, so it is one of the decisions worth making early even if you install later.

How does it arrive?

Flat packed it arrives with the cabinet it belongs to and you fit it as you build that cabinet. Ordered delivered assembled, it is fitted and adjusted before the carton is closed.

Why this matters when you pick who builds it

None of this is exotic. It is the ordinary detail of specifying joinery properly, and the reason it is written down is that most quotes do not account for any of it. Someone who has not thought about the drop height on your rail, the clearance your drawer needs or where the mirror sits when it is open will still quote you a number — it will just be a number for a robe that works less well than it could have. We draw these decisions into the plan before anything is cut. That is what you are choosing when you choose who to buy from.

Wardrobe lighting — questions

If your question is not here, call the studio. We would rather talk it through than have you guess.

Ask us directly →
Why does a wardrobe need lighting?

Because the bedroom light sits behind you and casts your shadow onto the clothes. Light inside the robe is the only arrangement that shows a colour properly.

Should wardrobe lights be sensor or switched?

Sensor for most robes — it comes on as the door opens and is never left on. A walk-in you spend time in is better on a switch.

Can wardrobe lighting be added later?

Power needs to be on the plan before the carcass is built. Retrofitting means a visible cable or a visible cut.

What is a lit display drawer?

A glazed, lit drawer for watches and jewellery. It is as much display as storage, and the one fitting in a robe people show other people.

In their words

The people who already
cook in one.

“For what we paid compared to what similar kitchens were costing elsewhere, we’re extremely happy with it.”
Sarah Wallace

“Could not be happier with our kitchen. The funny thing is, pretty much everyone who’s come over since we installed it has asked who did our kitchen and assumed we spent a lot more than we actually did.”
Brian T.

“Once we saw it in person, it was a pretty easy decision. It looked even better than we expected.”
