Shoes in boxes are shoes you forget you own. The whole job of this fitting is keeping them visible.

Angled racks, flat shelves or rotating?

Angled racks show the whole shoe and fit more pairs into the same height, which is why they are the default. Flat shelves suit boots and anything that will not sit on an angle. A rotating rack holds the most in the least floor area and suits a walk-in corner, where it turns the hardest part of the room into the most useful.

How many pairs, realistically?

More than you plan for. The number people give at drawing stage is almost always the number they own today rather than the number they will own, and shoe storage is the fitting most often regretted as too small. If it is a close call we draw the larger one.

Where should it go in the robe?

Low, for the obvious reason, and near the door of a walk-in rather than the back. Shoes are the thing you reach for last and in a hurry. Putting them at the far end of a walk-in is a small daily annoyance that compounds.

What about boots and sports shoes?

Boots need height and will not sit on an angled rack, so they want a dedicated flat section — worth saying at drawing stage if you own several pairs. Sports shoes want ventilation more than anything, which is an argument for open racks rather than a closed cabinet.

How does it arrive?

Flat packed it arrives with the cabinet it belongs to and you fit it as you build that cabinet. Ordered delivered assembled, it is fitted and adjusted before the carton is closed.

Why this matters when you pick who builds it

None of this is exotic. It is the ordinary detail of specifying joinery properly, and the reason it is written down is that most quotes do not account for any of it. Someone who has not thought about the drop height on your rail, the clearance your drawer needs or where the mirror sits when it is open will still quote you a number — it will just be a number for a robe that works less well than it could have. We draw these decisions into the plan before anything is cut. That is what you are choosing when you choose who to buy from.

Frequently asked

Shoe storage — questions

If your question is not here, call the studio. We would rather talk it through than have you guess.

Ask us directly →
What is the best wardrobe shoe storage?

Angled racks for most shoes, flat shelves for boots, and a rotating rack where a walk-in has an awkward corner to use up.

How many pairs should I plan for?

More than you own now. Shoe storage is the fitting most often regretted as too small.

Where should shoe storage go in a wardrobe?

Low, and near the door of a walk-in rather than at the back, because shoes are what you reach for last and in a hurry.

Do boots need different storage?

Yes. They need height and will not sit on an angled rack, so they want a dedicated flat section.

In their words

The people who already
cook in one.

“For what we paid compared to what similar kitchens were costing elsewhere, we’re extremely happy with it.”

“Could not be happier with our kitchen. The funny thing is, pretty much everyone who’s come over since we installed it has asked who did our kitchen and assumed we spent a lot more than we actually did.”
Brian T.

“Once we saw it in person, it was a pretty easy decision. It looked even better than we expected.”
